Wilmington's giant ground sloth: When a local hero was (re)discovered (starnewsonline.com subscription) — Wilmington’s own prehistoric celebrity is a 1.5‑million‑year‑old giant ground sloth first uncovered by a local skateboarder in 1991 near today’s Randall Parkway. Scientists from the Smithsonian helped excavate the remarkably complete fossils, now displayed in Raleigh, while a towering replica—plus a few original bones—welcomes visitors at the Cape Fear Museum in Wilmington.
   

4. Four-legged first responder: LONDON joins WFD crisis response dog team (wwaytv3.com) — Wilmington firefighters have a new four-legged teammate: LONDON, a specially trained crisis response facility dog now working out of Fire Station Five on Shipyard Boulevard. Partnered with senior firefighter Adam Molinelli, the black lab will help calm stressed crews and comfort people on emergency scenes, aiming to ease anxiety and reduce long-term PTSD effects for first responders and residents alike.
