  1. Three men from Winston-Salem have pleaded guilty to charges in connection with the 2019 shooting death of a five-year-old boy. According to the Forsyth County District Attorney’s Office, 18-year-old Rudy Gomez-Medina, 20-year-old Enedino Vicente Morales, and 20-year-old Santiago Rodriguez Marcial, each pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder, as well as charges related to discharging a firearm. They have each been sentenced to serve a prison sentence of 13 years to 16 years and nine months. According to investigators, the three were shooting at a rival gang member when a bullet penetrated a wall and fatally struck five-year-old Alberto Rios Navarette. (Subscription: The News Herald)
  2. Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools and Winston-Salem State University are partnering to bring a new mentoring program to students at Cook Literacy Model School (CLMS). WSSU students were at the CLMS campus earlier this week for the Radical Academic Mentoring Service program. Around 30 college students are expected to visit with fourth and fifth grade students throughout November. CLMS Principal Celena Tribby expressed optimism that the program will create opportunities for students. (WXII)
  3. The immunization deadline for students in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools is coming up on Sep. 27. District Superintendent Tricia McManus spoke at a recent board meeting and explained that there are 2,300 students who still need state-required vaccinations. According to state law, those students are not supposed to be allowed to attend public school past the deadline. To help ensure all students are immunized, the district is holding clinics at R.J. Reynolds High School and Wiley Magnet Middle School on Tuesday, Sep. 19. There will be additional clinics on Thursday, Sep. 21 at East Forsyth High School and Walkertown Middle and High schools.
