It's hard to believe, but soon summer will be winding down. So before the kids head back to school, why not spend some time as a family enjoying all that our community has to offer?

If you're looking for a place to get started, we've rounded up five fun things to do in the Winston-Salem area before the kids head back to school. Pro tip: Call ahead to confirm hours and access, stay hydrated, and if you're heading outdoors, bring plenty of SPF and bug spray!


1. Gateway Nature Preserve

Gateway Nature Preserve offers a beautiful natural area with trails, educational programs and wildlife observation opportunities. Kids can explore the Pollinator Garden and other diverse habitats, splash along Salem Creek and learn about the local ecosystem through trail signs. 2. Kaleidium

Kaleidium is an experiential learning museum for kids of all ages, filled with exhibits and programming that encourage a passion for STEAM. The space was renovated and reimagined in February 2024, with the Rooftop Adventure exhibit opening just this summer! 3. Roar

Roar is an entertainment complex that offers fun for the whole family, including bowling, virtual reality games, an arcade and an esports center. Want to get outside? Head to the lawn (complete with a dog park!) for some outdoor games, or let the kids enjoy the splash zone (weekends, weather permitting). 4. Safari Nation

Safari Nation is an indoor playground and entertainment center with inflatables, a zip line, a jungle gym and a toddler playground. There are three Safari Nation locations within a half hour of Winston-Salem, including the Peters Creek Parkway location here in town; note that bumper cars are only available at the High Point location. 5. Total Escape

Total Escape offers private, immersive escape room experiences with various themes and difficulty levels, challenging kids and families to solve puzzles and work together. Current rooms as of the time of publication include The Enchanted Forest, Temple of Tikal, Prison Break and Yacht Heist.
