- The Winston-Salem Police Department is asking for the public's assistance to identify a truck that is believed to be connected to an attempted abduction. On Wednesday, Aug. 23 around 5:30 p.m., a woman was jogging in the area of Cemetery Street and East Salem Avenue when a man in a truck tried to abduct her. The woman escaped without injuries, and the suspect fled. Anyone with information is asked to call the Winston-Salem Police at 336-773-7700. (WFMY News 2)
- A Winston-Salem health center is working to address the disproportionate impact that Alzheimer's disease has on African Americans, who are twice as likely as white patients to exhibit symptoms. The Maya Angelou Center for Health Equity is researching the genetics of the disease and providing education to the community on the signs and symptoms of Alzheimer's. The Maya Angelou Center also encourages African Americans to participate in research trials in order to ensure results are representative of the community. - Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools announced that 16 additional schools have qualified to offer students free breakfasts and lunches. There are now 64 schools in the district offering free meals to students. This program is made available through the USDA's Consumer Eligibility Provision (CEP). Students at non-CEP schools can still apply for free or reduced-cost meals. (WXII12)
