- Several streets in downtown Winston-Salem are set to be repaved. The first piece of road getting repaved is Fourth Street between Spruce and Liberty Streets, followed by the segment of Fourth Street between Spruce and Broad Streets. The segments of Fourth Street should take around two weeks to complete, then the city will move onto Third and Fifth Streets. Third Street will get repaved between Patterson Avenue to Research Parkway, and the Fifth Street segment will include Broad Street to Research Parkway. (Winston-Salem Journal)
- Winston-Salem-area vet Dr. Shannon Jarvis, medical director of the Oldtown Veterinary Hospital, is helping locals get their furry friends ready for what - from their perspective - must be a bit like an alien invasion: Independence Day celebrations! Per Jarvis, pets are likely to exhibit several signs of discomfort and distress in response to fireworks, including trembling, shaking, and hiding. It's important, according to Jarvis, to keep dogs and other pets indoors during firework displays - "Because it's not fun to them - it's like the sky is falling." (WXII 12)
- The nearby High Point police have made three arrests and detained nine other persons as a result of an investigation on High Point's East Commerce Avenue on the evening of Wednesday, Jun. 28. Police initiated a stop of a skateboarder who matched the description of a wanted man believed to be carrying a gun. The man on the skateboard, identified later as Jae'Vian Rivera, fled the scene and has been arrested. A gun was found on his person in the process. He has been charged with resisting, delaying, or obstructing a police officer, carrying a concealed gun, and impeding the flow of traffic. (WXII 12)
