Here are the top three stories today in Winston-Salem:

  1. An arrest has been made in connection with a fatal crash in Winston-Salem that occurred on Pleasant Street, resulting in one fatality. On Wednesday, the driver, 39-year-old Courtney Watson, lost control of the vehicle, causing it to tip over and come to rest upside down. Watson fled the scene but was located shortly after, and she is now facing charges including felony death by a motor vehicle and hit and run. (WXII12)
  2. Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools has been approved for a Teacher Residency program, allowing individuals with bachelor's degrees to teach in the district while earning a salary and a teaching license. The program begins with a five-week summer intensive training, followed by full-time teaching and licensure-specific coursework, with weekly cohort meetings. The district aims to provide support and mentorship to beginning teachers, especially those without an education degree, to help them develop the necessary skills and provide better outcomes for students. 3. Sabrey Smith in nearby High Point has made it onto the heart transplant list after living with a heart pump for almost seven years. Smith suffered a blood clot in 2013 and was diagnosed with congestive heart failure not long after. Smith was living in Houston, Texas, at the time, working two jobs, and mourning her late son. Smith lived with a left ventricle assist device for two years before discovering she had breast cancer. She is waiting for a call to receive a new heart and will go directly to Duke University Hospital when she does. (WGHP FOX8 Greensboro)
