Here are the top three stories today in Winston-Salem:

  1. Homeowners in Winston-Salem will be seeing an increase in property taxes going into effect next month. The city council recently approved the budget for the 2023-2024 fiscal year that will result in homeowners paying a tax of 66.1 cents for every $100, an increase of 2.5 cents. Although this is an increase in taxes, the city still ranks as one of the lowest major cities in North Carolina. Although some voted against these changes, it is believed this will positively impact the community with higher police and city salaries, improved equipment for leaf pickup, more money for street repaving, and much more. 2. On Saturday, Jun. 24, thousands came out to Winston-Salem Pride in support of the LGBTQ+ community. The celebration included live music, street performers, food vendors, hands-on activities, and drag performances. Over 40,000 were in attendance at the event showing how welcoming all are in the community; the fun continues today, Jun. 28, for the second annual Pride March hosted by the Alternative Resources of the Triad nonprofit at 6:00 p.m. (WFMYNews2.com)
  3. Earlier this week, downtown Winston-Salem began a multi-staged repaving project that is expected to take several weeks to complete. This week, Fourth Street will be closed between Liberty and Broad streets; detours will be posted for traffic to adjust as this is expected to take roughly two weeks. Then starting on Jul. 10, work on Fifth and Third streets will begin as road crews are expected to make their way through the streets that need repaving. If everything goes according to plans, street repavings are expected to be complete by Monday, Jul. 31. You can check the progress, detours, and construction news here. (WXII12 Winston-Salem)
