Here are the top three stories in Winston-Salem today:
- Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools announced yesterday that it will be expanding the use of its 74 metal detectors at high schools throughout the school district. The metal detector usage will go into effect once students return from spring break on Apr. 11 and will move metal detectors from middle schools to high schools for random, unannounced use. The chief program officer of safety and security for the district, Jonathon Wilson, said that the decision is not due to any one particular event, saying, "What you're seeing is an evolution of our safety plan. This is not to alarm anyone." (Subscription: Winston-Salem Journal)
- Forsyth Tech Community College students returned to school on Monday following an active shooter alert on campus last Thursday that canceled classes on Friday. Students reported mixed reactions to the return to campus, and Forsyth Tech President Janet Spriggs sent an email prior to classes. Sprigg said, "Weβre fortunate and grateful that this incident came to a safe conclusion and did not result in a different outcome. Nevertheless, we all went through something traumatic, and it is clear from notes that I have received as well as from social posts that some of us are continuing to work through the fear and anxiety our community experienced on Thursday." - Winston-Salem local Thomas Workman, 47, won a $120,000 jackpot on Monday by playing his father's lucky numbers. Workman said, "It's jersey numbers from some favorite players like Scottie Pippen (No. 33) and Shaquille O'Neal (No. 36)." Both Workman and his father used to play the lottery together, and he chose to continue using the numbers after his father died. (WFMYNews2.com)
