  1. Earlier this week, Winston-Salem Police Chief William Penn introduced members of the newly formed Community Engagement Committee. The group includes 43 members from diverse backgrounds who will work to increase communication and connections between community members and the police. The committee will meet quarterly with Penn to provide feedback on community issues. Committee members expressed gratitude for the opportunity to strengthen their communities and excitement at the prospect of positive changes to reduce violence. (WXII)
  2. The emergency room at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital has been equipped with metal detectors that patients and visitors will pass through before entering the facility. This move is in line with other local hospitals and medical centers that have recently installed metal detectors. According to a spokesperson for Atrium hospital, the goal of the metal detectors is to increase safety for staff members as well as patients and visitors. Additionally, Atrium hospital has installed amnesty boxes for patients and visitors to place banned items, such as knives or guns. (Subscription: Winston-Salem Journal)
  3. Police in Winston-Salem are searching for a man who is accused of armed robbery at a Dollar General store. The incident occurred on Tuesday, Jul. 17 around 11:30 a.m. Police say that upon entering the store, the suspect pointed a handgun at people β€” including a mother holding an infant β€” and demanded money. The suspect reportedly stole items from the store and then fled the area on foot. Anyone with information is asked to call the Winston-Salem Police Department at 336-773-7700 or Crime Stoppers at 336-727-2800. (WXII)
