- Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools will implement a math tutoring program in the fall of 2023, partnering with Heart Math Tutoring. The program has a proven track record of success, benefiting thousands of students in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools through one-on-one tutoring sessions. With the aim of addressing learning gaps worsened by the pandemic, the district selected Bolton Elementary as the pilot school for the program, offering weekly tutoring sessions to 50 students chosen by math teachers. - Late Sunday night, Winston-Salem Police responded to a shooting incident on Francis Street, where they discovered Telly Woods, a 47-year-old man, injured with a gunshot wound to the groin. The suspect fled the scene, and their identity is currently unknown. Woods was transported to Atrium Health Baptist Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the Winston-Salem Police Department or Crime Stoppers. (ABC 45 News)
- Nearly $750,000 has been granted to Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools to prepare a site for the new Brunson Elementary School. This grant was provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and its Brownfields Program which works to reuse properties previously contaminated by industrial uses. In 2021, the school district purchased an old Thomasville Furniture plant in north Winston-Salem for $2.25 million. The school district can start utilizing the funding this summer, and the school is set to open in 2025. (WFDD)

From my notebook:
- Hot air balloon pilot Dan Gerbus delighted seventh-grade students at East Forsyth Middle School with a balloon demonstration, providing an unconventional educational experience that tied in with their science and math curriculum. The students learned about various aspects of flight and aviation, including heat dispersal, weather forecasting, wind patterns, and air volume measurement. You can see a picture of the hot air balloon at the link! (Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools via Facebook)
- Earlier this week, ESS, an education management and staffing company, awarded a $5,000 scholarship to East Forsyth High School's Amaya Matthews.
