Here are the top three stories in Winston-Salem today:
- A new mural commemorating local musician "9th Wonder" has been unveiled in Downtown Winston-Salem, on Trade and Liberty Street. The artist behind the masterpiece, Scott Nurkin, aims to educate people in North Carolina about their culture and history while instilling pride in the community. The celebration of "50 years of Hip Hop with 9th Wonder" will be held on Jul. 24 at Reynolds Place Theatre, featuring a master class and Q&A panel that is free to attend. (WXII 12)
- Researchers at Wake Forest University of Medicine in Winston-Salem and Vanderbilt University Medical Center have been awarded a $3.2 million grant to develop computer-based approaches for ear disease diagnosis. The goal is to create machine-learning applications that can improve the diagnostic accuracy of ear pathology, reducing unnecessary antibiotics prescriptions and surgical interventions like ear tube placement in young children. The researchers will use digital otoscope videos and tympanometry to develop new imaging technology that will aid medical professionals in diagnosing ear diseases more effectively. (WSOC-TV)
- The City of Winston-Salem experienced a water outage on Saturday, Jul. 22 due to a pump failure caused by system flushing after reports of discolored water. Repairs have been made, and water service has been restored to all customers. Water department officials have verified that the water is safe for drinking and cooking. (WXII 12)
