- Authorities are on the lookout for a suspect connected to the robbery of a Dollar Tree on the afternoon of Sunday, May 28. Officers responded to a report of a robbery in the 3000 block of Waughtown Street. According to witnesses, the suspect entered the Dollar Tree and brandished a pistol, and police said the suspect was last seen fleeing the scene into a nearby parking lot, where they got into a silver four-door sedan. Anyone with more information is asked to contact the Winston-Salem Police Department at (336) 773-7700 or Crime Stoppers at (336) 727-2800. (WXII12 Winston-Salem)
- Two students are currently under investigation in nearby Wake Forest after concerning drawings were found on the campus of Wake Forest Charter Academy. Some of the drawings depict corpses, marked with "die," and embellished with people hanging by ropes. One of the drawings has "help" written on it 17 times, with an illustration of a person lying face down on a floor. Per Wake Forest Town Spokesman Bill Crabtree, "The juveniles have been identified and officers are in contact with their parents." (CBS17.com)
- The proposed budget for Winston-Salem went to the mayor and city council on Tuesday. The budget boasts increased spending for the local police force, bumping up the minimum salary for new officers to $52,500, and offering a salary adjustment of 10 percent for those already employed with the department. For some time, local police departments have had staffing issues because of the financial impracticality of hiring and retaining officers. A public hearing will be held Thursday, Jun. 1, and the council is planning to put the proposal to a final vote on Jun. 20, with the budget set to take effect on Jul. 1. (WFDD)
