Here are the top three stories today in Winston-Salem:
- After seven months of extensive renovations, the closed sections of Second Street have reopened as of Tuesday, marking the completion of the project. Initiated in November 2022 and funded through the 2018 bond referendum, the $3 million makeover aimed to transform First and Second Streets into two-way thoroughfares, resulting in improved traffic flow and a more pedestrian-friendly environment. City Director of Transportation, Jeff Fansler, expects the renovation to mitigate traffic speed and enhance accessibility to downtown areas. (WXII12)
- Boom Supersonic unveiled specifications for their planned commercial supersonic jet at the Paris Air Show, to be built at the Piedmont Triad International Airport in nearby Greensboro. The jet called the Overture, will be designed and developed by three firms. Boom's 62-acre Piedmont airport campus began construction in January and is slated to be complete in 2024, with Boom pledging to invest $500 million and employ more than 1,750 people in the Piedmont area by the end of 2020s. - An investigation is underway into a report by a man who alleges he was shot while exiting a Winston-Salem barbershop. On Monday at around 7:30 p.m., police responded to a call about shots fired on the 1800 block of North Patterson Avenue, where three 9mm shell casings were found in a parking lot. Roughly 30 minutes after the initial call, a 32-year-old man arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound to the thigh, reporting that he had been shot while leaving a barbershop in the vicinity; anyone with more information is asked to call the Winston-Salem Police Department at (336) 773-7700, Crime Stoppers at (336) 727-2800 or En Espanol (336) 728-3904.
