Here are the top three stories today in Winston-Salem:
- Truist hosted the 27th annual Trellis HOPE Run/Walk 5k to raise funds for grief counseling and hospices. The race is a staple for Trellis Supportive Care, a nonprofit that provides grief counseling and other services related to hospice medicine. The run began in Bailey Park on Patterson Avenue, Saturday, Apr. 15, and went through the remainder of downtown. Roughly $80,000 has been raised so far toward Trellis' target of $100,000; donations can be made at the link. (WXII12 Winston-Salem)
- A Winston-Salem man is in critical condition as of Apr. 16 after a shooting at the Countryside Court apartment complex early in the morning the same day. When officers arrived on the scene Cassius Foster, 36, was found with a gunshot wound to the head. Foster was taken to a local hospital. According to authorities, a white car followed Mr. Foster into the apartment complex and fired several rounds into his vehicle, hitting him in the head, and causing his car to crash into nearby parked vehicles - an investigation is ongoing, and anyone who may have more information is asked to call the Winston-Salem Police Department at 336-773-7700. - Three letters to the editor are currently on display in The Readers' Forum section of the Winston-Salem Journal, as of Apr. 11. Local John Tucker writes to condemn the expulsion of Tennessee Democrat House Representatives Justin Jones and Justin Pearson; Troy Chavez concurs, adding "We can disagree, but we can't silence conversations for our personal benefit. Democracy is deliberative, not exclusionary;" Jada Hawkins writes about her concern for the decrease in the local bird population which she pins on climate change; finally, Louise Gaither, in Mocksville, writes that "Dumbing down the newspaper is one thing, but dumbing down the obituary section is quite shameful," in response to the Winston-Salem Journal's downsizing of its obituaries.
