  1. Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools officials are working to develop guidelines for teachers and staff on the new Parent's Bill of Rights. The state law β€” which was passed only two weeks before the school year began β€” requires teachers to notify a child's parents if the child asks to use a different name or pronouns in class. Superintendent Tricia McManus said that the district is developing guidance, and in the meantime, teachers are advised to speak with building leaders. McManus emphasized that the district's decision-making process is guided by what's best for students to ensure they feel safe and included while at school. (Subscription: Winston-Salem Journal)
  2. The Winston-Salem Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred on Sunday, Aug. 27 on Grove Avenue. Police reported that several shots were fired, although there was only one injury. A person sustained a gunshot to their foot, and they were transported to the hospital for treatment. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Winston-Salem Police Department at 336-773-7700 or Crime Stoppers at 336-727-2800. (WXII)
