Here are the top three stories in Winston-Salem today:
- The City of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County have both been named recipients of the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant. This grant is made available through the Department of Justice and provides funding for local and state criminal justice initiatives. The Winston-Salem Police Department and the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office will each receive $140,315.50 in grant funding. Assistant City Manager Patrice Toney said that the city will use its funding to purchase audio and visual equipment for the Vivian H. Burke Public Safety Center auditorium, which will improve the department's ability to hold training events, presentations, and large-scale response efforts. (Triad City Beat)
- Wake Forest University has announced a new program aimed at first-generation students called the Early Action Initiative. Vice President of Enrollment Eric Maguire explained first-generation college students can submit their application to WFU by Nov. 15 and will receive a decision in early January 2024. Students who are offered admittance will have until May 1 to consider all their college offers and financial aid options before making a decision. (WXII)
- The Winston-Salem Police Department arrested one man following a shooting incident that led to a pursuit. In the early morning hours of Monday, Aug. 21., officers were working to locate Kevin Spain, the suspect in a domestic-related incident in which shots were fired into an occupied home. Officers attempted to perform a traffic stop on Spain when he was seen speeding through downtown Winston-Salem. Spain did not pull over, which initiated a pursuit that lasted until Spain crashed his vehicle at the intersection of North Trade Street and West Fourth Street. Spain is in custody, and officials say charges are expected. (WXII)
