Here are the top three stories today in Winston-Salem:
- The Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) Choir will be taking on one of the biggest stages in the world on Sunday (Apr. 9) as they have been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York. The choir has been working nonstop since August and is excited to have their voices heard on the big stage this weekend. Many members of the choir have never been to New York and are getting a huge introduction to the city. The WSSU choir will be performing with other historically Black colleges and universities as well as talented high schools across the country and abroad. (WXII12 Winston-Salem)
- Winston-Salem police are currently searching for a suspect who attempted to rob Dollar General on Tuesday night around 8:30 p.m. The suspect reportedly attempted to use force to steal money from the register with a firearm while purchasing an item. Unable to steal anything, the suspect retreated from the store and was picked up in a white sedan with a loud muffler. Police are asking the community to keep an eye out for the suspect, who was described as a light-skinned Black male between the ages of 20-30 wearing a grey hoodie and black joggers and having a thin mustache. (WGHP FOX8 Greensboro)
- Winston-Salem has been recognized by the National League of Cities for its efforts to promote inclusion and involvement among its citizens and innovative programs for cultural diversity, placing second among cities with populations between 200,001-500,000 people. The city was praised for its Building Integrated Communities program and related activities, which create a one-stop shop for immigrants and refugees to access various services. To celebrate diversity, the city will sponsor activities throughout April, including a proclamation from Mayor Allen Joines, an exhibit of artwork with themes of diversity, musical performances, and food trucks representing different countries.
