Update: Avon High School 'Secure and Safe,' Senior Prank Suspected

Avon High School evacuated, four taken to hospital due to unknown irritant in hallway.

Update:

"Avon High School is secure and safe," said principal, Kristina Dobos Buller on Twitter at 4:29 pm Tuesday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, Avon High School had been evacuated, students were dismissed early and four students were taken to University Hospital via ambulance to an unknown irritant which was isolated to a specific hallway.

WKYC reports that the four girls are all OK but they had experienced dizziness and difficulty breathing.

Avon Fire officials are investigating, but suspect that the unknown irritant may have been part of a senior prank and are reviewing surveillance video.

Avon Police released the following statement:

"On Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at approximately 2:24 p.m., the Avon Police Department received notification from an Avon Police Officer assigned to the Avon High School that there was an unknown irritant detected within the school building that was affecting students and teachers."

"The unknown irritant was contained to a specific hallway in the building and a small number of students and teachers in the immediate area were having difficulty breathing. Officers from the Avon Police Department, as well as members of the Avon Fire Department, immediately responded to the high school and assisted in the evacuation of the building as a precaution."

"Students were dismissed early for the school day at that time. The high school property was evacuated and students were escorted to the Avon United Methodist Church, where they were picked up by their guardians."

"Four students were (taken) by ambulance to University Hospitals Avon Emergency Center as a precaution. At this time, the source of the unknown irritant is unknown. The Avon Police Department will be working closely with the Avon High School administration, as well as the Avon Board of Education, in an attempt to identify the source of the irritant."

A possible irritant has been detected in a hallway at Avon High School prompting an evacuation.

Student drivers are being released at this time and students needing picked up by parents will be released to parents at Avon Methodist church next to the high school according to Avon Police via Twitter.
