Here are the top three stories today in Avon-Avon Lake:

  1. The Avon Lake City Schools Board of Education members voted to accept the registration of Pam Ohradzansky at the July 12 meeting. A steadfast member of the board for the past 18 years, Ohradzansky was first appointed in 2004. Her current term expires December 31, 2023. “I’ve decided to resign from the school board because I believe the timing is right for me,” Ohradzansky said, in the news release from the school district. “I am confident that there is someone waiting in the wings who is as passionate about public education as I am, who is ready and willing to dedicate themselves to the Avon Lake City Schools the way I have for the past 18 years." Jim Stobe, president of Avon Lake City Schools (BOE), noted the board will miss Ohradzansky’s contributions as a member. Stobe said, in the release. “Pam has played a lot of roles for the board including board vice president, representative to the JVS and representative to the health care committee.
“But most importantly, we will miss Pam’s kindness, compassion for helping others and thoughtfulness.” The BOE will begin the process of filling the vacancy immediately, according to the release. The deadline for applications is July 28. (The Morning Journal)
  2. Have you ever wondered what goes into being an Avon Lake police officer? Why not sign up for this year's Community Police Academy? Starting September 7, every Wednesday evening the Community Police Academy will meet to provide hands-on learning opportunities and lectures. Topics covered will include: communications, patrol, evidence collection and firearms. Get your application for the academy at the dispatch window of the Safety Center or via email request to rburson@avonlakepolice.org. (Avon Lake Police via Facebook)
  3. If you're wanting to add a fuzzy ball of four-legged love and affection to your family, you should check out these animal shelters in and around Avon-Avon Lake for a pet to take home.
Millions of companion animals are surrendered or taken in each year by animal shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. However, only around half of all animals are adopted each year, ASPCA data shows. For those looking to adopt, a great place to begin your search for a lovable new fur child is at Friendship Animal Protective League, where Megan the cat is waiting patiently, or another local shelter. From my notebook:

  • FIDO's Companion Rescue Inc.: "I have no words. Only tears. I feel broken. It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our sweet Edith who lost her battle to parvovirus recently. She was rescued on Saturday by our amazing Mama Fido with FIDO's Companion Rescue Inc. and was started on meds immediately. Unfortunately, her poor body was not responding and they could not get her vomiting and diarrhea to stop or slow down. Our hearts as well as everyone at Fido's and West Park are completely broken for our sweet girl and this is why we stress so much to vaccinate your dogs. " (FIDO's Companion Rescue Inc. via Facebook)
  • Avon Lake City Schools: "The Avon Lake City Schools has a vacancy on Avon Lake Board of Education." (Avon Lake City Schools via Facebook)
  • Love-A-Stray Dog Division Non-Profit Rescue: "This little senior Chihuahua came from LCDK Volunteers of Lorain County Dog Kennel, hit by car and needed medical help. LAS answered the call and she is recovering well and sure looks happy now!" (Love-A-Stray Dog Division Non-Profit Rescue via Facebook)
  • Avon Lake Public Library: "It was a fantastic evening with Anne E. DeChant and company, last night outside the Library with more than 150 of you in attendance on a perfect summer evening! Anne rocked it out with engaging stories, passionate lyrics, and powerful notes throughout the night with humor, moxie, and exceptional ease!" (Avon Lake Public Library via Facebook)
  • Avon Lake Saddle Club (ALSC): "Hello everyone! Please see attached for the patterns for this weekend's show. Please note, the date on the patterns is from 2021, but they are the correct patterns. See you this weekend!" (Avon Lake Saddle Club (ALSC) via Facebook)
