Dear Avon Lake Community,

On August 27, 2021, the district adopted a mask requirement for students in grades K-6 due to an increase in COVID-19 cases. As part of that adoption, we indicated that the decision would be reviewed on an on-going basis. This communication is to inform you that the K-6 mask requirement will continue to remain in effect for grades K-6 during the hours of school operation. However, it is encouraging that case numbers of COVID-19 are declining. We will continue to monitor the situation and if this trend continues, we may be able to end the mask requirement in the near future.

Throughout the pandemic we have relied on the expertise of numerous organizations including the Ohio Department of Health, Lorain County Public Health, Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals and local government agencies as we made decisions related to the health and well-being of our students. Continued collaboration with the health care experts from these organizations will be instrumental as we work toward lifting the mask requirement for Avon Lake students. Specific data on COVID-19 in Avon Lake City Schools can be found on the “Parents & Students” page of our website and is updated daily.

Our goal continues to be to keep students and staff in school, in-person, therefore continuing the mask requirement is necessary at this time. Please be patient and continue to work with your school’s teachers and staff members as we navigate the end of the current COVID-19 spike.

Sincerely,
Bob Scott, Superintendent
