Avon Lake Power Plant To Be Sustainably Redeveloped By Charah
The coal-fired power plant will be redeveloped to better the Avon Lake environment and boost public access to the lake, the company said.

AVON LAKE, OH — Charah Solutions will acquire the Avon Lake GenOn coal-fired power plant in early April 2022, the company announced.
The company intends to sustainably redevelop the property and begin environmental remediation once the property transfer is complete. The coal-fired plant will continue to be operated by GenOn until the property transfer is complete.
"This is the end of an era, and it reflects the changes occurring in our nation and around the world," said Avon Lake Mayor Greg Zilka. "We’re excited about a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a transformational redevelopment for Avon Lake that will open up a 40-acre site on Lake Erie to the public, while we also take a big step forward in cleaning up our environment and improving the quality of life for our community.”

The GenOn property consists of nearly 40-acres stretched across Avon Lake's Lake Erie coast. Many of the parcels are on land adjacent to the coal-fired plant. Charah will use a subsidiary, the Avon Lake Environmental Redevelopment Group, for the decommissioning of the coal power plant and performing of all remediation and redevelopment work at the site.
The redevelopment group has obtained the services of Avison Young to provide real estate advisory advice and to oversee the future sale of the remediated property. The goal is to "expand economic activity and benefit the surrounding communities through job creation," the company said in a statement.
