Car Chase Through Avon Lake Ends With SUV Hitting Mail Truck

Police said the suspect hit 80 mph while driving down Lake Road.

AVON LAKE, OH — A man with a suspended driver's license led police on a high-chase through Avon Lake that ended with his SUV crashing into a U.S. mail truck.

A vehicle was driving erratically at 3:20 p.m. on Saturday, a 911 caller told police on Saturday afternoon. When officers found and stopped the SUV, they discovered the driver — Jonathan Sims — had a suspended license, according to Fox 8. His passenger also had a suspended license. Sims appeared intoxicated, police said.

Sims told police he would have his girlfriend come and pick him up and he was allowed to wait for her arrival in his car. At approximately 5:20 p.m., Sims started his car and sped away and officers pursued him.

The chase hit speeds of 80 mph on Lake Road, police said. During the pursuit, Sims drove around a school bus and two Avon Lake school band trucks, police added.

The chase ended when Sims hit a Jeep and a U.S. mail truck, police noted. After officers pulled Sims and his passenger from the car, they found an open bottle of liquor in the vehicle.

One person was hurt during the car chase, but is expected to fully recover, Fox 8 reported.
