Two Cleveland men have been accused of a carjacking in Elyria.

CLEVELAND — Two Clevelanders were indicted in connection to a January carjacking in Elyria, the Department of Justice announced Friday.

Clinton Lindsey, 24, from Cleveland, and Trayqwan Dunlap, 19, face charges of carjacking and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence. They were indicted by a federal grand jury on Friday.

“Carjacking is a borderless, brazen crime that can affect anyone at any time, often without provocation," said FBI Special Agent in Charge Eric B. Smith. “This indictment underscores our longstanding partnership with the Elyria Police Department and the commitment of the Federal Bureau of Investigation to protect the American public.”

On Jan. 27, 2022, Lindsey and Dunlap flashed a gun and threatened a person pumping gas at an Elyria gas station, court documents said. The duo then stole the person's car and drove away, the documents added.

Elyria Police located the stolen car as it was speeding through their city. Officers followed the car as it pulled into downtown Elyria and then crashed into a pillar, court documents said.

Two people then jumped out of the crashed car and began running off, court documents said. Police tracked the two suspects and took them into custody that day. Police said they found a Glock .45 pistol in the stolen car.

The FBI and Elyria Police Department led the investigation into Lindsey and Dunlap.

“As the number of carjackings and other violent crimes persist, we will continue to marshal our federal resources and focus on apprehending and prosecuting those individuals that endanger our community,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Michelle M. Baeppler.
