
George Maverick, 89, of Avon, died January 6 at his home.
After graduating from Midland (Penn.) High School, Maverick joined the United States Marine Corps, serving in World War II from 1942-46 in the South Pacific.
When he returned from service, Maverick worked a variety of jobs, including as a lumberjack in Minnesota, a clerk for City of Cleveland Courts, on ore boats for Cleveland Cliffs, as a manager for a Lawson's store, and, finally, as a fire marshall for Republic/LTV Steel, from where he retired in 1988 after 15 years.

Maverick was also a talented musician. He sang, and played the guitar and accordion. During his stint in the Marines, he and some Marine friends won first place in a talent show at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
He was also a lifelong baseball fan and talented gardener, with roses being his specialty.

Maverick is survived by his wife of 54 years, Nellie (Thompson) Maverick, sons George B. Maverick and Michael A. Maverick (Stacey) both of Avon, daughters Karen F. Clayton (Jim) of Seattle, Wash., and Marianne Maverick of Avon, and sister Helen Newadomski of Beaver, Penn. He was predeceased by parents George and Julia (Lukacevic) Mraovic, Sr., and brothers Raymond Mraovic and Bernie Mraovic.
Calling hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, at Busch Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, at the funeral home, followed by interment at Saint Joseph Cemetery.
