When MTV launched 30 years ago today with the words, "Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll," we didn't know what was about to hit us.

On MTV, we watched Michael Jackson's fame soar and his nose disappear as he made the music video an art form with "Thriller" and made their premieres must-see TV in the days before DVRs. We discovered bands we may never have known otherwise like Flock of Seagulls, Duran Duran and Culture Club.
Madonna may have been the shrewdest and smartest of them all, knowing how to use imagery, fashion and the true heart of rock and roll -- pissing off the parents -- to turn what was then a reed-thin voice and a dance club beat into worldwide fame.
