🌱No More Free School Lunches + Kendra Gardiner Voted Onto BOE

Here are the top four stories in Avon-Avon Lake today:

1. Free school lunches will no longer be available to all students. Federal funding provided through waivers during the pandemic allowed schools to give free lunches regardless of a family’s income. Congressional funding expired in late June. Avon Lake City Schools on average served 2,000 free lunches each day last school year. School lunch this year will cost $3.25 for high school students, for Learwood and Troy, it’s $3 and for all four elementary schools it will be $2.75, according to WJW Fox 8 News. 2. Members of the Avon Lake City Schools Board of Education voted on August 9 to appoint Kendra Gardiner to the vacant board seat after the recent resignation of Pam Ohradzansky. Gardiner will serve the remainder of the term which expires Dec. 31, 2023. She must run for election next year to retain the position. Avon Lake City Schools via Facebook)

4. Avon Lake resident, 55-year-old John Pelton, a former operator with a Northern Ohio public utility, pleaded guilty to recording the computer keyboard strokes of coworkers while employed at the utility and to making false statements to FBI agents. According to The Department of Justice, "Pelton officially pleaded guilty to a Bill of Information charging him with attempting to access a secure computer and obtain information and providing a false statement to a government official. Pelton is scheduled to be sentenced on November 16. (Department of Justice)
