
J.M. Smucker announced Thursday that it is recalling some of its peanut butter because of possible salmonella contamination.
The recall is for the 16-ounce chunky Natural Peanut Butter, specifically for containers with best-used-by dates of August 3 and August 4 of 2012. The UPC is 5150001701.
The affected product was sold between Nov. 8 and 17 in Ohio as well as Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia.

No illnesses have been reported, the company said in a statement Thursday.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, salmonella is an bacterial infection. Within 72 hours, infected people often get symptoms including abdominal cramps, Â fever and diarrhea. It can last for four to seven days.

If you have one of the containers being recalled, dispose of it immediately and contact the company at 1-888-550-9555 for a replacement coupon. Proof of purchase may be requested. Calls are being taken from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
While most people make a full recovery, some, especially children and the elderly, develop complications if the diarrhea is severe. Dehydration is also a risk.
