Speed, Alcohol Played Roles In 4 Deadly Lorain County Crashes

Health officials reviewed 10 recent fatal car accidents in Lorain County and looked at what causes the crashes.

AVON, OH — High speeds and substances continue to cause deadly car crashes in Lorain County, a new analysis found.

The Lorain County Traffic Fatality Review Committee reviewed 10 fatal traffic crashes that happened between March 20 and Aug. 6. The accidents left 10 people dead, the committee said.

Here were the primary contributing factors to the deadly crashes, the commitee said:

  • Speeding played a role in four crashes.
  • Alcohol played a role in four crashes.
  • Possible medical issues played a role in three crashes.
  • Drivers under the age of 25 were involved in three crashes.
  • Motorcycles were involved in three of the crashes, though each rider was wearing a helmet.
  • Drugs were involved in two crashes.
  • Distracted driving was involved in one crash.

“It is important to remember the basics to keep us all safe,” said Health Commissioner of Lorain County Public Health David Covell. "Drive focused, always wear a seat belt, wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle, drive sober, and look out for bicyclists and pedestrians on the roads."

So far this year, there have been 20 deadly crashes in Lorain County, leading to the deaths of 20 people.
