Teen Driver Billboard Contest: Avon Lake Student Wins 2nd Place

The 2021 Teen Driver Safety Billboard Contest​ was won by a Firelands High student, but an Avon Lake High student took second.

AVON LAKE, OH — An Avon Lake High School student took second place in the Teen Driver Safety Billboard Contest.

The winning artwork will be displayed on four billboards throughout Lorain County. The contest was organized by State Farm and Lorain County Public Health (LCPH).

The contest was won by a Firelands High School student. She will receive a $500 gift card for her winning artwork, called "Don't Tempt Fate." Avon Lake High's winner received a $250 gift card for her artwork, called "What Are You Risking?"

“As students learn how to drive, it’s critical to adopt the habit of driving focused,” said Dave Covell, health commissioner at LCPH. “This billboard contest gives students a platform to highlight the dangers of distracted driving."

The 2021 Teen Driver Safety Billboard Contest received 73 entries, including submissions from Avon High School, Avon Lake High School, Firelands High School, Lorain County JVS, Marion L. Steele High School, Lorain High School and Wellington High School.

Judges rated artwork on its creativity, originality and how well it communicated the importance of focused driving.

Last year in Lorain County there were 266 traffic crashes that involved a distracted driver, LCPH said.
