Assumption Boy Scout Troop #810 was led by Scout Jacob Lampert in designing and building a new raised garden plot at the Greene Acres Community Garden in Broadview Heights. Work began for his Eagle Scout Badge project in early February. Scouts working on the project were Christian Bryk, Seth Eldridge, Calvin Fischer, Alen and Ben Hechko and Jacob and Thomas Lampert. The adult leaders that came to guide were David Deran, Mark Eldridge, Darrell Smith and Jack Murrin. Jacob began planning the project by drafting a design, assessing the materials needed and noted the safety issues for the gardener. Work then begun by purchasing lumber at the Larsen Lumber Yard in Brecksville and hardware purchased at Home Depot and Menards.
On the day the project was being built, the cold and windy February day, the old soil that had wintered over was frozen like a 1,000 pounds frozen large chunk of soil. The scouts removed the legs of the old garden and rolled the block of soil over to its side in order to start work on building the new raised garden bed. The construction went smoothly, taking less than 90 minutes to complete. By this time, the sun, even though the outdoor temperature at Greene Acres was in the 30’s, warmed up and softened the block of soil enough to chip away at it and put the soil back in small clumps into the new bed. This marked the completion of their project.
Greene Acres and its membership wish to Thank the Boy Scout Troop 810 for their dedication to take on this project. The member who will grow his vegetables appreciates a new garden bed, as the old one-over 10 years old- was leaning so much, along with the lumber rotting and needed to be replaced.

In the past 12 years, scouts from Troop 810 have done several other projects for Greene Acres—building compost bins, in the ground fencing to help prevent small animals from invading the gardens, helped at the summer work days by applying wood chips to walkways, and previously build the original raised garden bed they just rebuilt.
Yes, the Scouts do truly follow their motto, “Be Prepared”, and by accomplishing projects such as these, we truly believe they will “be prepared” for life.
