Brecksville Citizens' Ballot Request Headed to the Secretary of State

The county Board of Elections voted 2-2 on the city's protest on Monday.

The this fall isn’t over yet.

A nonpartisan citizens group called Brecksville Citizens for Transparent Politics collected enough signatures to get an issue placed on the ballot this fall. Basically, the group wants Brecksville to support adding an amendment to the federal constitution saying corporations aren’t equal to people and money isn’t equal to speech.

The city is fighting this because officials think it’s beyond their reach. The city’s protest was heard by the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections on Monday, and their 2-2 vote means the Secretary of State will make the final decision, said Law Director David Matty.

Matty said the city has been told Secretary of State Jon Husted should look at the issue next week.
