Couple Charged with Petty Theft for a Not-So-Free Dinner and Signs Reported Missing from Yards: Brecksville Police Blotter

The following incidents were reported by the  from Aug. 29 to 30. The information was compiled from police reports.

Vandalism reported
On Aug. 30, a Brecksville woman reported that someone had damaged her car the night before. She had parked it in the carport in the 7000 block of Carriage Hill Drive around 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 29. At about 7 a.m. on Aug. 30, she noticed a deep scratch across the trunk. She said it looked like it was done with a sharp tool, not a key, and did not know who would have done it.

Free dinners were not on the menu
Police received a call that a couple had run up a tab at and were trying to leave without paying at around 9:37 p.m. on Aug. 29. When the police got there, the 61-year-old Cleveland woman told officers that she had told the hostess when she walked in that they only had 50 cents but still wanted to eat. The bill shows they ordered soups, sides, steaks and alcohol. When asked why they were not paying the about $104 bill, the woman said it was because they had no money. She said she was taking care of the homeless and made references that “God would provide.”

The 50-year-old East Cleveland man said he had met the woman at a food kitchen. She picked him up at a homeless shelter, and he said she had told him the meal would be "her treat." The person who served them both said there had been no mention of not having money and said that they seemed under some sort of influence. Both were charged with petty theft by deception.

Missing signs
On Aug. 29, a Brecksville business owner reported that five steel signs for his company had been taken from yards in the 8700 block of Riverview Road. The signs were for V&V Contractors and cost $200 each. The business had been contracted by the residents for work on the sewer. Four of the signs were missing on Aug. 27, and one was missing a day later.
