Cincinnati Parks: Dying Tree Brings New Life To CincyParks

This red oak at Ziegler Park has provided shade to residents of the community for the better part of a century and has featured prominently in the memories of many Woodward high school graduates.

Sadly, over the last few years the tree has gone into decline and needs to be removed. But this tree leaves something special behind…oak seedlings. Parks staff collected the seedlings produced by the tree, which will be planted back out into parks for the next generation to enjoy.

While this tree will be removed, its neighbors will be given additional care to give them the best chance of recovery. They will have any dead wood removed from their canopies by certified arborists and the surrounding soil will have organic matter incorporated into it using an air spade to correct the soil compaction. This will help to make sure these trees remain part of the landscape for many years to come.
