Bio-Med Science Academy Receives Governor’s School Innovation Award

The Academy is a STEM+M high school that opened in 2012 and has been one of 19 schools to receive a perfect report card.

From Bio-Med Science Academy: Bio-Med Science Academy was honored Tuesday, Jan. 24 by Gov. John Kasich during the Governor’s School Innovation Awards event held at the Ohio Statehouse.

Stephanie Lammlein, chief administrative officer of the Academy, along with teacher Candace Hisey and 10thgrade student Cody Clark, accepted the award from Kasich, who offered praise to the school’s innovative methods throughout the three-hour program. Kasich specifically praised the school’s flexibility for students within its curriculum, stating he would like to see it applied throughout other districts in Ohio.

Kasich also announced a 2 percent increase in funding for public primary and secondary schools during the next two fiscal years, as part of the state’s upcoming biennial budget.

"We are fortunate to have such an amazing team of people working hard to become a model for change," said Lammlein. "We are honored to be recognized by the governor and will continue to push forward into new educational frontiers for our students’ futures."

Bio-Med, which opened its doors in 2012, is one of just 19 high schools in the state to receive a perfect report card of all β€œA’s” in 2016 by the Ohio Department of Education. In the past, the Academy has also been recognized by the Department as the state’s top-achieving STEM school and top-achieving high school in Portage County.

The Academy, a STEM+M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine) high school located onNortheast Ohio Medical University’s campus, offers students (and teachers) the opportunity to take advantage of sophisticated research laboratories and guest lectures from an array of scientific researchers. Faculty from NEOMED and other local colleges and universities as well as professionals from engineering, science, biomedical and other companies provide lectures and serve as project advisors.

Curriculum is based on current trends in science and medicine as well as on the research and education being conducted at NEOMED.
