Kent Girls Soccer Beats Twinsburg 2-0
Rough Riders advance in state semi-final tournament action
By all rights, the Twinsburg girls' soccer team could have ended Kent Roosevelt’s tournament hopes in the first 10 minutes of Tuesday night’s first round sectional game.
Kent avoided being down by a multi-goal margin when its goalie, Jenn Doershuk, turned away repeated Twinsburg breakaways in the early moments of the game. Twinsburg’s offense took early advantage of their home field turf and nearly ran the Kent side off the artificial pitch.
Kent recovered its bearings when senior Erin Waples managed to get off a long range drive that skimmed over the outreached fingers of the Twinsburg goalkeeper. The Tigers continued to dominate possession, but the Rough Riders prevented the home team from getting anymore clear shots on goal.

Kent doubled its advantage when midfielder Stine With slipped through at the 34th minute and went one-on-one with the Twinsburg keeper, who came off her line and collided with the charging midfielder. For the collision, the keeper was sent off with a yellow card. With gathered herself up off the pitch and proceeded to drive the penalty shot past the Twinsburg substitute keeper.
In the second half, Kent’s first-year head coach, Leslie Niece, rallied her players, who subsequently adjusted to the wet field conditions and held even with their host team. Kent’s Doershuk had a relatively relaxed second half as her defenders forced Twinsburg away from the visitors’ goal.
