The heavy snow storm also prompted city officials to put an on-street parking ban in to effect that essentially bans on-street parking on all city road ways indefinitely so plow crews can clear the ice and snow more easily.

Schmidlin said the wet start to 2012 comes off an above-average year for precipitation in Kent. Last year, Kent had 55.11 inches of precipitation, which is counted as combined rain and snow melt. While 2011 was only 11 inches above the average for precipitation it was the second-wettest year in the last 26 years, Schmidlin said.

"Some Ohio cities had a record wet year in 2011," he said. "Kent did not."

Light snow is expected to continue tonight and into Wednesday, but it's the temperatures that will be of most concern. The National Weather Service is predicting wind chills in the area of 1 degree Fahrenheit in Kent Wednesday.
