Victims of Domestic Violence Benefit at Kent State

Fundraiser supports Portage County's Safer Futures shelter

The will host a fundraiser for victims of domestic violence in Kent and Portage County Oct. 22.

"Hope in a Handbag" silent auction will be held in the atrium of the museum at the School of Fashion Design and Merchandising.

New and gently used handbags, purses and clutches will be up for auction with all proceeds to benefit Safer Futures, the domestic violence shelter in Portage County run by . In 2010, the shelter responded to close to 1,000 requests for service and provided shelter in a safe, confidential location for 100 victims of domestic violence.

“Maintaining our shelter 24 hours a day, 7days a week requires a lot of resources," said Anne Lofaro Face, director of shelter services. "That’s why we hope the community will support this important event.”

The Saturday fundraiser starts at 6:30 and ends at 9 p.m. and is still accepting donations of high-fashion handbags. If you would like to donate a purse to the event contact Bonnie Wilson, Director of Business and Community Relationships at 330-297-7027 extension 371.

Tickets for the event are $25 per person. Reservations can be made by calling Family & Community Services at 330-298-9107 or sending a check to Safer Futures at 705 Oakwood Street, Suite 221, Ravenna, OH 44266. Deadline for reservations is Monday, Oct. 17.
