Free Lifesaving Training Course Coming To Lakewood

LAKEWOOD, OH — Lakewood could soon be offering free CPR training to all residents.

Lakewood City Council passed a resolution on Monday containing the city's budget priorities. Included in the legislation was an initiative to re-institute free CPR training for all residents. The program could be up and running as soon as early 2022, according to Councilperson Tristan Rader, who proposed bringing the program back.

“CPR has been proven to save lives. When CPR is provided within the first few minutes of a person coding, that person’s chance of survival increases by two to three times. Because so many cardiac arrests occur outside the hospital, it is vital that community leaders and everyone else know how to perform chest compressions," Rader said.

CPR training would be conducted by the Lakewood Fire Department and would be open to any residents who wanted to learn the life-saving skill. Costs for operating the program would be minimal for the city, Rader said, and would include things like additional training for instructors, program materials, promotion and administration costs.

The training course would be free for residents.

Rader said an announcement from the city would come later on when the program will open and how to sign-up.
