Lakewood Firefighters Rally Together to Help Sick Child

A benefit is scheduled to help the daughter of a Lakewood firefighter at St. Mary's banquet hall at 3256 Warren Road in Cleveland at 6 p.m. April 20.

In addition to protecting the community, Lakewood firefighters take care of their own.

The local union is hosting a benefit for the daughter of firefighter Joe Cawley, whose daughter Meghan was born with several severe birth defects.

She’s undergone two brain surgeries to combat hydrocephalus and Klippel-Feil syndrome.

But there’s more.

Meghan, who just marked her first birthday, still faces additional out-of-state procedures, including one in Salt Lake City in the coming months.

And with mounting medical bills, the family could use some help.

Joe and Sarah Cawley have insurance through the city's health care program, but still pay for many out-of-pocket expenses.

A fundraiser is scheduled to take place at St. Mary’s banquet hall at 3256 Warren Road in Cleveland at 6 p.m. April 20.

“I am blown away by all the work they’re putting into this for her,” said Joe Cawley, who joined the department 12 years ago. “The response we’re getting has really blown us away. There’s been lots of support.

"It’s been great and it’s not just the fire department. The support from the whole community has really been amazing.”

The cost to attend the benefit is $50, but that includes beer, wine and soft drinks; as well as live entertainment provided by The Other Brothers.

There will also be a $1,000 reverse raffle to raise money for the family.

To buy tickets for the event call 440-477-5534 or 216-408-9728. Checks can be made payable to the Lakewood Firefighters Local 382, with “Meghan Cawley Benefit” in the memo field.
