Lakewood Parking Garage Collapses, Building Evacuated

Residents of the apartment complex have been evacuated and will need emergency shelter, the city said.

LAKEWOOD, OH β€” A parking garage at Marine Towers in Lakewood collapsed Thursday.

The collapse happened at approximately 10 a.m., Lakewood police said. When emergency crews arrived, they determined that an underground parking garage at Marine Towers West had collapsed.

"There are no reported injuries at this time. The residents of the building are being evacuated until it can be determined if it is structurally safe," police said in a statement. The Westshore Trench Collapse Rescue team is on-site.

The residents will likely not be able to return to their apartments until after Christmas. City officials have been coordinating to provide shelter for residents in need.

"The City’s Human Services Department has made arrangements for emergency housing for all Marine Towers West residents in need, and Mayor George is coordinating response efforts with city personnel," George's office said in a statement.

Marine Towers West are located on Edgewater Drive.
