How Much Do You Know About Lakewood?

Every town has its traditions. Check out these fun facts about what makes Lakewood so special.

Lakewood is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Lakewood has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • Did you know that Lakewood was once known as "Jefferson City"? The city was renamed to Lakewood in 1969, after a public contest to choose a new name.
  • Lakewood is home to the famous Casa Bonita restaurant, which has been a beloved local spot since 1974. The restaurant features cliff divers, live entertainment and delicious Mexican food, making it a fun destination for families and tourists alike. Though Casa Bonita is temporarily closed as of February 2023, it’s slated for a grand reopening in May 2023.
  • If you're a fan of history, you'll love visiting Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park. This living park and museum features 15 historic buildings, over 40,000 artifacts and various rotating and permanent exhibits. It also includes a festival area and an outdoor amphitheater for live events.
  • Did you know that Lakewood is home to over 113 parks and 240 miles of trails? From Bear Creek Lake Park to Addenbrooke Park, there's a green space for everyone to enjoy.
  • For a fun indoor activity, check out Conundrum Escape Rooms in Lakewood. With themes like "Cabin in the Woods” and "Mystic Chamber," these escape rooms offer a thrilling challenge for groups of all sizes. See if you can solve the puzzles and escape before time runs out!
  • Lakewood is located at the base of the Rocky Mountains, and the city is just a short drive from world-class ski resorts like Breckenridge and Winter Park. If you're a fan of skiing or snowboarding, Lakewood is a great home base for your next mountain adventure.
  • The city is also home to the Belmar Shopping District, which features over 80 shops, restaurants and entertainment venues. You can catch a movie, grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants, or browse local boutiques for unique gifts and souvenirs.
  • For a unique outdoor adventure, check out the Bear Creek Greenbelt. This 379-acre park offers hiking and biking trails, fishing ponds, and wildlife viewing opportunities. You might even spot a bald eagle or a coyote on your visit!
  • If you're interested in art and culture, don't miss the Lakewood Cultural Center. This performing arts venue hosts a variety of events, including theater productions, concerts and dance performances. The center also features art galleries and offers classes and workshops for adults and children.
  • Lakewood is home to several craft breweries and distilleries, making it a great destination for beer and spirits lovers. Some local favorites include the Great Frontier Brewing Company and Green Mountain Beer Company. Cheers!
  • Another local attraction that you might not know about is the Colorado Mills Mall. This shopping center features over 160 storefronts, as well as restaurants, gaming and a movie theater.
  • If you're a nature lover, Lakewood is home to the Lakewood Gulch Trail. This paved trail offers a scenic route for walking, jogging, or biking. Along the way, you'll enjoy views of the city's parks, creeks and wildlife.
