Here are the top three stories today in Lakewood:

  1. Lakewood School District is becoming more "green!" At Lakewood High School, no food goes to waste and more than 500 pounds of food waste has been diverted from landfills in just a few weeks. The district is composting all the food waste from its cafeterias, food science classes, and the student-run restaurant The Ranger Cafe. Chef Devan Corti, a culinary arts instructor, said they are teaching the students to be environmentally aware and are currently transitioning all of their takeout containers to compostable ones. Lakewood Schools plans to expand its composting program throughout every building in the district. (News 5 Cleveland WEWS)
  2. Cleveland Magazine's Dining Guide posted "Cleveland's Best Black-Owned Restaurants," which included Southern Cafe in Lakewood. According to the magazine, Chef Tony Fortner’s "innovative twists on traditional soul food" make this restaurant worth trying. The restaurant is located at 11817 Detroit Avenue. (Cleveland Magazine)
  3. Cleveland.com asks the community to vote on the best junior girls basketball player in Northeast Ohio. Lakewood's Delaney Garcia is one of the nominees! She is averaging 14.3 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. Vote at the link now through Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 11:59 p.m. (Cleveland.com)

Due mainly to flooding, Ohio ranks No. 17 in the U.S. for total property damage, with an average of $336.32 per capita. • The Lakewood High School Class of 1903 had only eight students! The Lakewood Library posted a picture of three of those scholars from its yearbook collection, including the class president Caddie C. Schoenhut. (Lakewood Librari via Twitter)
  • Audra is an adorable Terrier Pit Bull Terrier Mix dog who is looking for her new forever family! See Audra and more adoptable pets in the Lakewood area at the link. (Lakewood Patch)
