Car Sinks Into Flooded Parking Lot At Headlands Beach

Authorities from Mentor, Grand River and Painesville Township respond to partially submerged Cutlass

A call that initially came in as a "car stuck in the lake" turned out to be a car stuck in a flooded parking lot Sunday afternoon at , Mentor Fire Lt. Bob Evans said.

Fire departments from Mentor, Grand River and Painesville Township responded to the call, as well as police and park rangers, in part because all three municipalities' are responsible for parts of the park, Evans said.

The lieutenant added that so many people responded to the call because they, at first, thought a car was trapped in the lake -- which would have been a more dangerous situation.

However, the Cutlass was found partially submerged in a west parking lot, which is in Mentor. The lot was flooded and the car was stuck in less than two feet of water.

"The water wasn't above the front tire," Evans said.

Neither of the people in the car were hurt. The car was put on a flatbed and towed out.

Evans said the parking lot probably should have been roped off. He cautioned people to be careful because parts of the park sometimes flood during the winter.

"If you can't see the road, don't drive on it," he cautioned.
