Children Celebrate Mentor's 50th Birthday With Chalk Art

Children designed the sidewalk near Civic Center Park with pieces honoring half a century of Mentor.

Some of the city's youngest artists came to Civic Center Park on Thursday morning to commemorate the city's 50th birthday with their own chalky touch.

Children, ages 5 to 16, designed the sidewalk in front of the park with cakes, ticket booths and slogans honoring half a century of existence for the city.

The top winners in each age division received gift cards from Walmart, while runner-ups got goodie bags that--of course--included more chalk.

"My dad's a pretty good drawer, so that's where I get it from, said Juliana Slaninka, a 7-year-old winner, who goes to Bellflower Elementary School.
