City Council Approves Amended STERIS Tax Incentive Grant

STERIS could receive $1.3 million in tax incentive grants during the next 10 years

Mentor City Council unanimously approved extending and amending 's tax incentive grant.

STERIS first received the grant in 2010 when it began building a Customer Solution Center that created 239 jobs and cost $11 million.

In December, STERIS announced its latest project -- . The facility will build components for its sterilization products that will be shipped to other assembly locations.

The new site will also add 75 new jobs to the company's payroll. Moreover, STERIS had had three locations where they could have put the manufacturing site -- Ohio, Alabama or Mexico. But STERIS ultimately decided to expand in Mentor.

STERIS was lured to invest in Ohio partly because of an offer from the city and state that involves different tax credits, as well as low-interest loan, said official Mark Patton previously.

Instead of giving STERIS a new grant for its latest project, the city offered to amend its current grant with its largest employer.

STERIS's grant will be extended two more years to 2022.

Overall, STERIS will receive $1.3 million in tax incentive grants during the next 10 years (or $135,000 per year) for adding $13.6 million to its payroll, according to the legislation.

STERIS Senior Vice President Gerry Reis attended the City Council meeting to thank the city for its support.

"I can't say enough about the business-friendly (atmosphere,") Reis said. "I mean that with all sincerety."
