welcomed ten unusual tenants Tuesday.

A rooster and nine hens -- confiscated from -- are staying at the shelter for now.

"It's been at least a year since we have had farm animals in here," said Jennifer Sperry-Moats, the shelter operations manager.

While the shelter has had to house pigs on a few occasions, Sperry-Moats said chickens are rare.

"I can't remember a group of chickens being in here ever," she said.

For now, the chickens are held in a roofed and fenced-in enclosure inside of the shelter. The shelter workers had to buy special supplies, including bedding and feed, to accommodate the poultry.

Sperry-Moats said they aren't experienced in dealing with farm animals. However, Lake Humane staff member Brittney Sanfilipo grew up on a farm and was able to help them, Sperry-Moats added.

The chickens are available for adoption, just like most of the animals at the shelter. Those who are interested can call the shelter at 440-951-6122.
