Mentor Beats Riverside 3-0, Ready for Mayfield Matchup
After beating Riverside, the Sweet 16 is at stake Saturday morning against Mayfield
Mentor players and coaches smiled after their victory over Riverside on Friday, but their work is far from over.
The Cardinals earned a matchup with Mayfield at 11 a.m. Saturday morning at Kurt Stanic Field at Euclid High School after beating Riverside, 3-0. The winner of the Mentor-Mayfield game will win the Euclid district and head to the Sweet 16 in Canton.
The conditions on Friday were as frigid as any Northeast Ohioan can remember and the offense was sparse. However, coach Leonard Taylor was glad to ride the hot arm of senior Danny Trimble.

"Danny Trimble was lights out," Taylor said. "Danny threw a lot of strikes, he threw it quick, he threw it early in the count and he just overpowered them."
Riverside didn't get its first hit until the top of the sixth inning. Taylor will be looking for more offense against Mayfield, a team the Cardinals beat twice this year by a combined score of 15-0.

"(Dan) Walters (Jr.), their pitcher, he did a heck of a job," Taylor said of the Riverside player. "You give credit where credit is due, as well, but I was a little disappointed with our offense."
The Cardinals record is now 21-5.
