Mentor Softball's stunning season came to an end Thursday after North Canton Hoover beat the team 15-3.
The Cardinals had to contend with Hoover's strong bats after waiting about six hours due to rain delays at Firestone Stadium in Akron.
Hoover got started with a 2-0 lead after the first delay, but play quickly ended and the girls endured several false alarms from the OHSAA about when the game would resume.
This was the team's first-ever trip to the state's final four. Mentor beat Solon three times this season en route to its first-ever regional final game, where the girls beat Medina.
The team finished the year with a 20-11 record.
