Lake County Treasurer plans free presentations tailored for senior citizens (news-herald.com) — Senior residents in Mentor can attend free monthly presentations at the Lake County Council on Aging offices on East Ave., starting Jan. 30, to learn about property tax reform, financial safety, and more. Space is limited to 23 people per session, so those interested should register early with the Treasurer’s Office to secure a spot. 
2. Gas prices tumble in State of Ohio, Youngstown among lowest in Mahoning Valley (mahoningmatters.com) — Mentor drivers are seeing average gas prices around $2.68 per gallon this week, as fuel costs drop across Northeast Ohio. AAA reports prices are down 14 cents regionally and significantly lower than a year ago, with national trends driven by cheaper crude oil and strong supply. The story also compares prices in nearby cities and notes stable EV charging costs.
3. Ohio looking for potential childcare center fraud by conducting at least 400 random inspections (news5cleveland.com) — State inspectors recently conducted a detailed fraud-prevention review at My Kids Childcare in Mentor as part of Ohio’s 400 random daycare inspections, including 160 in Northeast Ohio. The owner says the surprise visit was thorough but positive, highlighting strict attendance tracking, background checks, and security measures aimed at protecting children and taxpayer dollars while easing concerns about alleged daycare fraud.
4. John Carroll men's basketball struggles in home loss to Ohio Wesleyan (news-herald.com) — Two John Carroll men’s basketball players from Mentor, including point guard Luke Chicone, couldn’t prevent a tough 106-90 home loss to Ohio Wesleyan on Jan. 7. Chicone battled through a bloody nose to finish with 16 points, while fellow Mentor product Sean Collins added 15 in a game the Blue Streaks hope becomes a defensive wake-up call.
