Police: 6 Picked Up On Shoplifting & Related Charges After They Tried To Flee

Two of the sextet have already been convicted of charges stemming from the incident that began at Great Lakes Mall

Mentor Police officers arrested six people on shoplifting and related charges after they tried to flee from Great Lakes Mall.

On Dec. 30, mall security spotted a shoplifter at , Mentor Police Lt. Tom Powers said. When security tried to stop her, she ran outside of the store and hopped into an SUV that drove away.

Mentor officers that were on Route 2 in Eastlake stopped the SUV and arrested all six people who were inside.

They also found merchandise that had been stolen from several stores, Powers said.

One of the people who was arrested is a teenager. She was charged with receiving stolen property in Lake County Juvenile Court. The other suspects are:

  • Diamond Simpson, 22, of Cleveland. She is charged with theft, falsification and possession of criminal tools. The criminal tool, in this case, is a screwdriver, according to court records.
  • Darien Smith, 22, of Cleveland. He is charged with complicity to theft.
  • Damon Simpson, 22, Chinail Terry, 19, and 20-year-old Jalisa Carter. They are all from Cleveland and charged with receiving stolen property and falsification.

All five of the adult suspects were arraigned Tuesday in .

Carter and Terry pleaded no contest and were convicted. Judge John Trebets sentenced Carter to 10 days in jail and fined her $100. He asked for a presentencing report on Terry before deciding her punishment.

The other three all pleaded not guilty and were released on bond. Their next court hearing is scheduled for Jan. 30.
